Spy Axe- Rogue Security

Spy Axe is a member of the growing family of rogue security software applications. This program typically enters the infected computer silently and without the knowledge or consent of the computer owner. Although classified as a minor to medium threat to the security and safety of your computer, it is an annoying and troublesome program.

Spy Axe has the ability to add files and registry keys to your computer and makes itself quite at home there. In fact, it might even invite other programs, adware and spyware, to visit and stay awhile.

Spy Axe claims to be a program that will remove unwanted spyware from your computer.
Users first notice the existence of Spy Axe on their computer through the pop up messages it generates through an icon located on the systems try of the infected computer. The messages inform the computer owner that his or her computer has undesirable parasites, including spyware, adware, and viruses, on their machine.

It suggests that the user purchase, download, and install the full scale version of their program. If the user does this, then the pop up messages will disappear in an attempt to continue to persuade the user that the program is indeed legitimate. In fact, Spy Axe will simply continue to track the user’s browser habits and will now begin to generate targeted messages based upon the user’s Internet use.

The advertisements are not dangerous in and of themselves, but are simply annoying and tiresome. Spy Axe and its processes may tie up some of the Internet bandwidth, causing your own browsing to become sluggish or disrupted. As the incidence of adware and spyware on your computer increases, the processing of your computer slows.

Spy Axe has its own website, which can be arrived at by clicking on the generated pop up warning of threats to your computer or through an unwitting Internet search. If an individual visits the website, Spy Axe may be able to download onto the computer. In fact, Trojans associated with Spy Axe are capable of force installing Spy Axe onto your computer even if you do not click to install the program.

Once Spy Axe has been discovered on your computer, it should be removed as quickly and efficiently as possible. One method of removal is for the user to take a series of steps. The first would be to follow these steps:

For Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows NT, and Windows XP in the classic view:

  • Click the start button in the lower corner of your screen.
  • Click settings.
  • Click control panel.
  • Double click the “Add/Remove Programs” icon in the control panel window to open it.
  • Search for the Spy Axe program in the list of currently installed entries.
  • Click on the phrase, Spy Axe to select it.
  • Click on the button that will remove the program, either “add/remove” or “change/remove.”
  • Follow the prompts that are given to remove Spy Axe.
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Open the Add/Remove programs icon and check to see if Spy Axe has been removed from the list of currently installed programs.
  • If the program has not been removed, then you will need to use the registry editor-at your own risk- to attempt removal. Simply back up your files before using the registry editor to avoid complications.

If you are using Windows XP in the default XP view, you navigate directly from start to control panel. Follow the remaining steps for removal.

Spy Axe has several variants or versions of its program. The constant changing of spyware applications is designed to help the programs avoid detection and removal. Spy Axe has also been seen under the following names: SpywareAxe, Trojan Spaxe, Spy Ase,
